What is postmodernism?

What is Andrew Goodwin's theory
“Postmodernists claim that in a media-saturated
world, where we are constantly immersed in media 24/7, on the move, at work, at
home, the distinction between reality and the media representation of it
becomes blurred or even entirely invisible to us. We have come to the stage
where we are copying copies and reality and identity s becoming blurred. In
other words, we no longer have any sense of the difference between real things
and images of them. The theory suggests everything now has been made and all we
can now do to find glimpses of originality is to mix tow old things together”.
Intertextuality – this is the relationship
which is forged between different texts, for example a television program may
be part of a series and part of a genre therefore some of the text is already
created before it begins

Andrew Goodwin’s 6 features of music videos
'Sugar'
The beginning of the music video for
‘Sugar’ is different to similar songs as the artist begins by talking to the
audience and explaining his ideas for the video itself. He says he wants to
“hit as many weddings as he possibly can”, the music video then progresses with
him and his band driving around and performing at various weddings, as the song
is based on the Pop genre this is different to other similar songs, as they
normally contain more fast paced shots and tend to tell more of a story in the
music videos.

During the song however lip syncing is used at different stages of the song, as at some points the video shows the artist driving around LA with the soundtrack playing in the background, lip syncing does occur throughout the song during the chorus.

At this point there is a relationship between music and the visuals as well as the tone and atmosphere as when the chorus begins the crowd/ people in the video begin to cheer which connotes that the music video is illustrative as the video is edited to the beat of the track.

In the music video the artist appears as they normally would as the artist is dressed suitably for the genre and isn’t playing a character in the music video therefore this is illustrative once again.
'See you Again'
During this music video lip-syncing is used during roughly half of the video and during the other half the video is humorous (using things from other texts) in this case the film ‘Fast and Furious 7’ is heavily linked with the song.

As the genre is Hip Hop as the video progresses the shot speed increase and more fast pace shots are used in order to represent the genre. The video contains close up shots of the singers and the actors from the film that the song is written about, this again represents the Hip Hop genre. the singers are also wearing there normal clothing and are not playing a character in the music video therefore the music video is illustrative
The music video is edited to the beat of the track in some aspects mainly during the chorus of the song when different sections of ‘Fast and Furious 7’ are shown, for example as the beat gets quicker in the song and during the chorus shots from 'Fast and Furious' are shown quicker and start to match the beat meaning that it is illustrative once again which is similar to 'Sugar'

Flash Card Deck created by Liam Nixon with GoConqralbum cover images
This is one of the photos we took for our
album cover (front cover) and I thought that it matched the genre quite well as
it features an image of the artist (Joe Chapman) in a natural environment e.g.
with trees and the sky as the background. However our task was to add a
postmodern element to our cd Album so we made the picture black and white in
order to create a retro effect. We then used colour matching to change the
colour of the skyline using final cut pro X.
This is one of the inside pictures that will feature in the album cover. Like the first image we have made the picture black and white to link to the postmodern element. Again this shows the artist in a natural background as this is what i found from my research of the genre and artist.
This third image will go behind the CD and this is different from all of the other images i have included on the album cover as this isn't in black and white however the colour of the guitar has been enhanced slightly. The guitar is a popular instrument for the genre of our song and it features several times during the song therefore we thought that it would be suitable to include in the digipack and it created a bit of variety in the pictures.
