In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Ancillaries
For my magazine I completely followed the forms and conventions of existing
horror products, one way I did this is by including the strapline at the top of
the magazine that says ‘The World Biggest Movie Magazine’. The intention of
this is to get the interest of the viewer therefore generating more interest
towards the film and this is common on ‘Empire’ magazines. As I am following
the conventions of an Empire magazine I have added their logo, as the title of
the magazine and this will also make the audience want to read the magazine
because of Empire’s brand reputation. The main image of the magazine features
the protagonist being stalked by the antagonist who is hiding in the shadows
therefore this relates to the name and plot of our film. However unlike other
film magazines we show both the antagonist and the protagonist in the main
image where as most other magazines only display the antagonist or protagonist.
The Barcode located on the bottom right adds to the realism of the magazine and
all magazines require this to be sold in the shop therefore this is a definite
convention that I have followed. We included both character to give the
audience more information about the film and persuade them to watch it. The name of our film is featured at the top of
the magazine in a white colour to make it stand out on a darker background.
White text is often used in horror posters as well to make the audience
recognise the name and pick the magazine up to read it. I have included some
buzzwords such as “PLUS” and these are also conventional for magazines and this
buzzword is used to introduce other features like other films that are included
in the magazine and these are featured at the bottom of the magazine so once
again adheres to the forms and conventions of a film magazine.
How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To get a response
from some of my target audience I sent out a survey to find out their opinions
and improvements they would advise making.
The responses from this question show that I have a strong brand identity between my ancillaries and my trailer and my audience can clearly recognise that so it has been successful as 87.5% said that they can tell my trailer and ancillaries are linked.
I have also had success in making my trailer look authentic as no participants that I have asked in my survey said that my trailer wasn't authentic however 37.5% only said partially. From this I have learnt that we could use more effective transitions and a larger variety of shots, from this research I am now going to film more shots and add them in to my trailer if the outcome gives the trailer a more authentic look.
Some of the comments I received as to why my trailer looked authentic were very positive, one participant said that it is similar to one they have seen before therefore suggesting that I have followed the conventions well from my research and my trailer is similar to existing media products. Another aspect of the trailer that was liked was because it does not reveal all of the story. This links to Todorov's theory as only 3 of the 5 stages (equilibrium, disruption & recognition of disruption) are normally shown in a horror trailer.
the main issues that my target audience have found is with the editing as they want to see faster paced shots which suggests more action as well as sudden loud noises which can be used to signify jump scares which are very conventional to horror trailers as they try to catch the attention of the audience and keep them interested.
My target audience thought that i followed the conventions well for the magazine and it clearly looks like a legitimate Empire magazine. However 25% of my participants only answered kind of therefore there is room to improve. I believe the aspects that need to be changed are parts of the layout and resizing certain images and text for example at the bottom of the magazine I have had feedback suggesting that 'Three Amazing Exclusives' needs to be made larger to attract the audiences attention.
87.5% of my participants for the survey said that my poster was effective in promoting the film therefore the audience will want to watch the film after seeing the poster making it successful in advertising the film. However similar to the magazine my group and I feel that there is still room for improvement therefore we are re-editing the poster to look more conventional to other similar horror products, like making it A4 in size which is the norm for all film posters. We have also had feedback saying that we should change the typography for our title of the film, so as said previously I am looking into changes that can improve the poster because of this feedback.
In response to the results from my survey, My group and I discussed ways in which the poster could be improved and this is Joe's final outcome.
Overall my products were very successful from my target audiences perspective and the graph above shows this. The trailer and magazine received an overall grade of 4/5 and the poster received 4.38/5 which is a very positive score. In reflection of the overall comments from my target audience I would now have changed the editing of our trailer to make the shots faster to connote action is taking place therefore it would be more exciting for the audience to watch. Another aspect of my trailer that could be edited is the sound as in some places it isn't realistic in comparison to other existing media products. In conclusion although I would now change some parts after my audience feedback I am pleased with the outcome of my productions and the majority of the target audience agree with this.
